What You Don’t Know About Maui Wedding Ministers

Did you know that nearly all of the Maui wedding ministers of today are not traditional Hawaiian ministers? A traditional Hawaiian minister is called a kahu. Kahu, in the native Hawaiian language, has many meanings such as: honored attendant, guardian, nurse keeper of bones, warden, caretaker, master, mistress; pastor, minister, reverend, preacher of a church and many more. The Hawaiian dictionary states that kahu “implies the most intimate and confidential relations between the god and its guardian or keeper.

The wedding ceremonies given by a standard Maui minister are usually Christian based in origin or non-denominational to suit a wide audience. Since people travel to Maui to get married from all over the world having the flexibility of being able to do a non-denominational ceremony makes it easy for anyone of any faith to have a beautiful non-religious ceremony on the beautiful beaches of Maui.

In closing, Maui is an amazing place to get married by extremely professional Maui wedding officiant to make your day perfect. Most likely your wedding will not be performed by an actual kahu trained in the traditional Hawaiian cultural customs. Not to worry though, your minister will be licensed by the state, and ready to make you legally married in all 50 states.

There are very few true kahus trained in the ancient Hawaiian ways these days and not just licensed by the state of Hawaii to perform weddings. As the Hawaiian culture continues to become diluted by intermixing of races and cultures the amount of people interested in carrying on the tradition also decreases. Therefore if you plan on having a Maui beach wedding, most likely you will be married by a state licensed minister, but not an actual kahu.

TToday, there are not enough kahus to perform the thousands of weddings and religious ceremonies happening on Maui each year so, thank goodness for the standard Maui wedding officiant to pick up the slack. Most Maui wedding ministers look very professional, often dress in traditional looking attire and do a wonderful job conveying a very Hawaiian style wedding ceremony. Even though not practiced in the ancient Hawaiian ceremony and culture Maui’s wedding ministers do a wonderful job of filling the need created by the ever increasing amount of Maui weddings annually. oday, there are not enough kahus to perform the thousands of weddings and religious ceremonies happening on Maui each year so, thank goodness for the standard Maui wedding officiant to pick up the slack.
